Why Commerce is a Smart Choice for Students

One of the branches which does not get its due visibility, but which has huge potential is Commerce. In this article we will discuss whether commerce is a good optionCareer Counselling Guidance for students.
With 10th results announced and 12th results expected any time, it is time for students to decide which group and which course to pursue.
Generally in South and particularly in Tamil Nadu many students prefer taking first group ( Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) . There is a perception that first group has huge potential. However if you look at North, Commerce is a much sought after group post X standard and a preferred course in college.
For us to understand the importance of Commerce course we need to understand the organisation structure of most of the organisation
CEO ( Chief Executive Officer) heads the organisation and CFO ( Chief Financial Officer) becomes no. 2 in the organisation. CFO will be a commerce graduate. In several companies all other functions report into the CFO which includes Legal and IT.
In most of the companies the top most position a person with IT Background can reach is the CIO ( chief Information officer) and he in turn reports into the CFO.
A finance graduate can not only become the CFO , he can also become the CEO ( no. 1 in the company)
Also the no. of steps an IT graduate has to climb to become a CIO is much much higher compared to the steps a Finance graduate has to climb to become a CFO.
A CFO is the one who ensures that the company nos. are good , is profitable and it is growing.
Also students can pursue CA or ICWA after completing 12th Standard itself. Students can also take up these courses while pursuing B. Com or any other graduation in college as well.
With the threat of AI impacting IT, it is time for all of us to understand that commerce is a smart choice for students across the country

How to prepare for a possible job loss

Preparing for a potential layoff Nowadays we keep hearing about layoffs and job losses every where.https://www.businessinsider.com/recent-company-layoffs-laying-off-workers-2026
There is no job assurance . In this context we discuss about how to prepare for a possible job loss .
Job losses happen based on the following reasons :
- Organisation restructuring
- A particular division or region getting closed down
- Improvements in productivity
- Cost cutting measures to increase profit margins
- AI https://www.contextualsolutions.de/blog/gen-ai-and-the-future-of-work
-
- Whatever be the reason, layoff has become more common nowadays. There is no need to feel bad on how will others treat you. Most of the time, in mass layoff, employees who have got affected had no role to play in influencing it .
Let us explore on how can one prepare himself and be ready to face the potential job loss or layoff :
First step is to understand that whenever you move out of an organization, your medical insurance, accident insurance, life insurance etc. whichever coverage applicable through your organization will no longer be available. As an immediate step please try to cover all your family members including parents and in laws through a medical insurance. Any injury or illness can make an upper middle class person become bankrupt.
Understand the notice period applicable for you – it can vary from 1 month to 3 months or more. Also understand informally whether there is any concept of severance pay. These will help you to get a visibility on your financials.
Most of the employees would have taken loan- can be housing loan, car loan or personal loan. Please talk to the respective service providers . Please understand the maximum tenure to which EMI need not be paid without loosing possession of the asset.
Do your calculations and understand what is the maximum runway that you have, to manage your finances without getting salaries. ie. whether you can manage 2 months or 5 months. Ideally one should have savings which can take care of his expenses for the next 6 months
Start building a corpus so that your children’s education is taken care .
Start preparing your family to come out of a luxury life style and be happy with basic amenities if the situation demands.Family Budget
Finally , spend every Rupee, every Paise as if it were the last paise in your pocket, thereby enabling you to prepare for a possible job loss.
Overall, hope for the best while you are prepared for the worst scenario.

Will AI impact my IT job

One of the most discussed questions is ” Will AI impact my IT Job”. This is important not only for an IT employee but also for students who are keen to take up Computer Science or allied branches and aspiring for an IT Job later. Time to plan
In this article we will analyze the impact of AI on IT.
At a broad level we will classify IT jobs into 3 categories :
- Development or programming related
- IT Infrastructure related
- Governance and business development.
We understand that programming will be slowly making an exit due to AI. There might not be need for programmers as AI will be able to do all the programming . However jobs related to architecting, designing a solution, conceptualizing etc. will continue to be there.
On the IT infrastructure front, it is very much required even for supporting AI. IT Infrastructure related jobs may be further classified as :
- Incident management
- problem management
- Change Management
- In this, AI will replace all Incident management and monitoring related jobs. Possibly a reasonable portion of problem management can also be replaced.
- However change management , planning the IT infrastructure, capacity management will continue to remain.
On the business development front, since this include building and maintaining relationship with prospects , it will continue to be unaffected. However jobs related to following up with clients, maintaining trackers, sales operations will also get impacted.
Also program governance jobs will continue to be unaffected
A study by IMF says that 60 % of jobs will be impacted in developed economies and 40 % of jobs will be impacted in developing economies https://www.imf.org/en/blogs/articles/2024/01/14/ai-will-transform-the-global-economy-lets-make-sure-it-benefits-humanity.
Hence instead of just asking ” Will AI impact by IT Job” , it is important for individuals to learn AI to protect themselves or scale up towards jobs which will not be majorly impacted by AI.

Evergreen engineering branches

While there is a mad rush towards IT and aligned branches, there are a few Core branches which will have demand always. In this article we will discuss about these Evergreen Engineering branches.
A study says that net addition (https://m.economictimes.com/jobs/hr-policies-trends/top-it-firms-add-just-17-staff-in-nine-months-hiring-nearly-freezes/articleshow/126606856.cms ) of manpower in the top 5 IT Companies in India in the first 9 months of this FY ( 2025-26) is just 17. This implies that while employees leave, there is no backfill. Also employees are loosing their jobs as well. So, you will have to decide whether IT is a right option to choose now.
However there are a few branches which will be generating good opportunities in the future. These are ECE, EEE and Civil. Let us analyze why these are potential branches in India.
There is a major thrust towards semiconductors and electronics. There is a focus towards mining rare minerals required for semiconductors and other electronic components. We are also seeing wars being fought for Rare minerals. India is also forming alliances (https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/us-india-pax-silica-significance-10469194/ ) with other countries . Effectively the roadmap is to do chip making in India itself and this will create huge job opportunities for ECE students.
We find it difficult to live comfortably without power even for 1 hour. Average per capita power consumption in US is 12,551 whereas in India it is 1182 https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.USE.ELEC.KH.PC .As India aspires to become a developed country, need of the hour is more Energy. Hence Electrical Engineers will be in demand. Also with the push towards renewable energy globally, potential is huge.
Finally to one of the traditional branches, neglected by several aspiring students . Yes, we are referring Civil Engineering. With major push towards infrastructure development in terms of roadways, waterways , airports, Defence corridors etc. Civil will be in demand. As urbanization increases, more and more opportunities will come for Civil Engineers.
So the choice is yours . Whether you want to follow IT or take up one of these Evergreen Engineering branches with huge potential in the future.

How not to choose a College

Deciding which college to join and which course to take is an important decision in one’s life. In this article, we discuss how not to choose a college.
In South India, parents want their children to study either Engineering or Medicine. In North , there is a tough competition for getting admission to arts, science and humanities. This implies that both Engineering , Medicine as well as Arts, Science and Humanities are equally good.
Most of the parents as well as School teachers advice their children to decide based only on perception. Similarly students decide their stream, college and branch purely based on what others will feel about them.
Many students who pursue Engineering want to join an IT company in the future. In reality IT is going through a difficult phase with many job cuts across the globe as well as in India. Also the question is for doing Coding why does one need Engineering ? Is there a job guarantee in IT .. The answer is NO in most of the Companies..
Students who are interested in Core Engineering subjects like automobile, mechanical , Electrical or Civil should only choose Engineering.
While deciding the colleges a detailed analysis is required. There are rankings given by NIRFhttps://www.nirfindia.org/Rankings/2025/CollegeRanking.html, NAAC which gives some idea about a particular Engineering college.
Beyond this there are excellent rankings published by India today on colleges. In the India today rankings https://bestcolleges.indiatoday.in/there are options to compare 4 colleges which is very exhaustive. It even analyses the no. of professors, associate professors , staff colleges have. However these details cover the college from a holistic perspective.
A particular branch or Department in a college can be far superior to the same branch in many other colleges. This will not get reflected in these rankings. This will get revealed only based on discussion with the college authorities , understanding the background of the college, their facilities for that department as well as discussion with students of that branch.
We advice students, teachers and parents to decide the college and branch based on the individual strength of the students, their comfort level in studying the particular branch. Also after detailed analysis on the pros and cons of the decision from short term and long term perspective and not to choose a college only based on what others say.

Time to plan
While board exam dates are getting announced, it is also time to plan for your future.
Generally first group students ( Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) want to become either an Engineer or a Doctor. Similarly Pure Science students wish to become a MBBS Doctor.
However data reveals that even in some IITs , students were not able to get 100 % placement last Academic Year.
With the evolution of AI and also situation globally, placements for Engineers will become lesser only.
Similarly if one has a passion for doing service for mankind and interested in medicine, he/she can look at alternate options like BDS, BHMS and Sidha . Even Physiotherapy can be considered as a good option.
Beyond these two streams, there are many good options like B.A. Economics, B.Sc Agriculture, LLB etc. Several top bureaucrats had pursued either B. A. Economics or B.Sc. Agriculture.
Above all, what is required is to go after your strengths and your passion rather than taking up a course just because every one has been taking it up.
You should analyse your strengths and weakness, understand the subjects where you are able to score good marks with less efforts and decide your future.
So, it is now time to plan.

Why not Dental

Several medical aspirants are desperately trying to take up MBBS courses and they want only to become MBBS Doctors. But the question is why not Dental
Let us look at the advantages of taking up Dental :
- It is relatively easier to get admission compared to MBBS
- It is less costlier than MBBS
- While after completion of MBBS one has to pursue atleast 2 PG courses and spend another 10 years in higher studies to stay relevant and ahead of others, same is not applicable for Dental
- Relationship between a dentist and an individual is life long starting from childhood .
While some medical aspirants feel Dentists are not on par with other Doctors, reality is, good skilled Dentists are in huge demand. Also if you are a skilled Dental Surgeon, you can setup a clinic and perform not only Dental surgeries but also several complex dental alignment procedures.
Realizing the potential of Dentists, several large chain of multi-specialty hospitals have opened Dental clinics every where.
With a population of 140 crores, India needs more dentists than any one.
So, take the plunge and become a Dental surgeon
