With the Higher Secondary results being published, students and parents are rushing towards colleges. But there are many who are not clear on the course types. This article gives an overview of courses in colleges for the benefit of students and parents

There is also a perception that any subject taught in a Arts and Science college is invariably an arts course. This is also wrong.

At a broad level, courses in colleges can be classified into :

  1. STEM Courses
  2. Arts Courses
  1. STEM stands for Science, Technology , Engineering and Maths. These are courses that are science oriented, discussions happen on formula, theory and practical.
    • Engineering has several branches like Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Computer Science, Electronics , Textile, Aeronautical etc.
    • Outside engineering, others include B. Sc ( Bachelor of Science) in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Computer Sciences, Biotechnology, Mathematics etc.
    • Other courses include Medical oriented like MBBS , Allied Health Sciences etc.
  2. Arts Courses :
    • These include Bachelor of Arts in Languages, ( Tamil, English) etc.
    • These also cover courses like Economics, Public Policy , Public Administration
    • Law related courses ( B. A LLB etc. )
    • Commerce related – B. Com

So, if a student is not strong in Maths, it is advisable to avoid choosing Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Courses. He or she can study courses like B.Sc. in Biology, Botany or Zoology. They can also study Agriculture, Medicine, Dental or allied health sciences. The other option is to choose Arts courses.

A student who is struggling in Biology should avoid choosing courses like medicine, allied health sciences, Bachelor of Science in Biology or their branches.

Students with good language skills can consider joining Arts courses.
