Multiple options in Medicine beyond MBBS

With all the confusions happening around NEET, there are students who do not want to look beyond MBBS , however what is interesting is there are plenty of options available for one to choose in Medicine beyond MBBS.

Firstly if some one wants to pursue MBBS he/she has to understand that just doing MBBS alone is not going to be sufficient. Necessarily one has to do MD or MS and DNB etc. Many of these include competitive exams like NEET and one has to gain experience as well as to prepare for these . Effectively a medical student has to be prepared to spend at least 15 years of his life in higher studies if he wants to take up MBBS.

Now let us look at alternate options in medical course counselling for students

Firstly we would suggest to take up BHMS or Homeopathy stream. Here what we understand is syllabus is similar to MBBS except for approach towards medicine. Also Homeopathy doctors do not go through stress as their focus is not towards emergency cases . Hence they can always maintain a work life balance. We have seen several Homeopathy doctors who are most sought after wherein one has to wait for multiple weeks to get their appointment. Also there have been few allopathy doctors who had suggested to get treated with Homeopathy for certain problems and were told that Allopathy and Homeopathy can work together.

Next come Siddha, (BSMS) this is another traditional medicine system from Tamil Nadu. If you are not convinced of the capabilities of Siddha, you need to visit the Siddha Hospital in Tambaram, Chennai where you will find long queues of patients. However what I understand is it will be suitable if you have a reasonably good knowledge of Tamil . Once again there have been several success stories of Siddha treatment addressing several skin issues in a short span of time compared to other streams.

There is another course called BNYS which is Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences. Here approach is to solve problems permanently naturally.

In the case of BSMS and BHMS cut off marks are far far lesser compared to MBBS. In the case of BNYS it does not NEET scores is what I understand.

Also there is always an option of Dental. BDS, once again cut off marks will be relatively lesser . Also it is not a 24×7 job where one has to handle emergencies. We understand that there are solutions given by Dentists where cost can be as high as 1 Lakh and more. Moreover in the current situation where lot of junk food is being taken, every one needs support from Dentists. Also Dentists will be managing one throughout the life as one ages, he will face issues of teeth falling etc. Dentists also ensure that your way of life is not impacted as well as ensure that your smiles are beautiful by giving right solutions.

Best part is all the above practitioners are also called Doctors and they can get admissions much easily compared to MBBS doctors.

    So start exploring these options

  • How to choose the right course for your ward

Choosing the right course for your ward

We are in a season of admissions wherein Tenth Standard students want to decide which subjects they should take – whether MPCB ( Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Pure Science group or Commerce or Accountancy or Computer Science.

Similarly those who have chosen any of the groups and have cleared their Twelfth Standard are also in a dilemma whether their ward should become an Engineer or a Doctor or pursue any other course.

When it comes to perceptions the race is between Engineer and Doctor. Every parent or most of the parents wish their wards should become an Engineer or a Doctor.

Question, is whether it is good enough for their ward to pursue the above two courses , whether it is aligned with their strengths, whether they feel comfortable taking up these courses.

Let me share some interesting statistics first – there are 25 Lakhs engineers graduating every Year in India. We also read in Newspapers that even in some of the IITs, students have not been able to get placement ( inspite of all their hardwork for several years for getting an admission ) .

I also read an article which says that there were few Engineering colleges part of Anna University wherein not even 1 candidate has cleared the Engineering exams and several Engineering colleges where pass % is less than 50 %.

Similarly in the case of Medicine, every one wants to pursue MBBS and only MBBS . One of the parents gave me a feedback that if at all your ward wants to pursue MBBS , you should be clear that one has to dedicate at least next 15 years in their pursuit for M.D or MS and other degrees like DNB etc. Also it involves lot of hard work as well.

Now coming back to the first question, how can a student who hates Mathematics take up Engineering ? . Similarly why should a student who finds it difficult to see blood in a lab test or who does not want to continuously learn, take up Medicine

Suggestion is before your wards decide their course please do an exercise to find out what makes them feel happy.

If some one enjoys Maths & Physics , has a problem solving mind set, looking for alternate options, possibly Engineering is a good option, provided he had enjoyed his labs .

If some one hates Maths, please do not push them to take up Engineering.

If some one likes studying about anatomy, willing to spend more than 15 years and ready to keep upgrading himself then he can consider Medicine.

If some one enjoys analysis, willing to spend long hours in analyzing data, talks with data, then they may consider taking Economics.

While many feel that ” Economics” will not give you good salaries or placement opportunities, reality is ” Economists” are one of the highest paid professions. They can become Investment Bankers which is one of the highest paid professions. Do you know that there are colleges charging more than 2 Lakhs per annum to study Economics and students get a starting salary of even 17 Lakhs.

One of my school mates used to run away from Maths classes, but came from an Art family. He enjoyed drawing and paintings and took up Pure Science group and later Botany and today is a reputed Botany professor.

There is also a perception that Commerce is taken up only by weak students. In reality, Commerce helps you to score high marks in Twelth and after doing if you do CA you have immense opportunities. In most of the organizations, Chief Financial Officers have a CA Background and they are the no.2 in the organization next to CEO.

We hope this provides basic career guidance for students

We will discuss further what attractive options are there beyond MBBS in Medicine in the next blog

How to get selected in VC interviews

In the current pandemic situation we come across 2 sets of individuals. One who have many offers and wondering which job to take and the other who is hardworking individual, good in trouble shooting but finding it difficult to crack the interview.

Our focus is to enable the second category of individuals to clear the VC interviews/

Success involves preparation and hard and smart work. So the first task for an individual who has got a schedule for an interview ( Video conference) is to start preparing for it immediately as soon as you have received the schedule if not much earlier/

First please do some home work on the company, their turnover, their clients and their offerings/

whenever you get a chance to talk to the HR person, who has scheduled the interview for you , try to get details on the names and designations of the interviewers.

Once you have these details , do some homework on Linkedin to get clarity on their interests, their background etc. This will enable you to prepare yourself for the kind of questions that you can anticipate from them.

Just to give you an example, when I had attended an interview with the hiring manager of a MNC after clearing the HR Round with the CEO and HR, he had asked me whether I will be able to get ITIL Certification for his company. It so happened that when I had earlier looked at his Profile , it came out that he was keen on ITIL. Unfortunately I had not prepared at that point of time and had to give him a roundabout answer.

Similarly the person who is your interviewer might also have been a person with a long stint in the same organisation that he is adapted to their culture and their terminologies that he might not be able to co-relate equivalent terms. Hence the more terms that you use which are given in their offerings or services it will be more advantageous to you/

Before the interview it will be good if you can test your microphone and Video conference facilities .

During the day of the interview, as much as possible, please be in formal wears and be well groomed. I have seen people coming up in a very casual way for interviews and they loose out on their first impression.

Mostly the interviewer will ask you to explain about your background, so have a clear story line to explain the same sequentially. Have seen candidates struggling to even mention the year they had completed their Schooling or college etc. When you explain, please emphasise on the areas on your experience which are similar to the work that you are going to do with the new employer. It is always better to fine tune your positioning about yourself in line wtih the job . For eg. while taking up an interview for a delivery posiiton, there is no point in explaining too much on your sales experience or vice versa.

Finally be candid, when it comes to answers and admit if you do not know something . Nobody knows every thing.

We hope that this gives you a fair idea on how to get selected in a job interview .

Wish you all the best !!
